Welcome to Media Studies 101, Contemporary Media, for this Winter 2023 semester.

Our class begins Tuesday, January 3. Please read this welcome message and complete the tasks listed below under “Getting Started.” Also, begin the work posted for Module 1 on the course schedule.

Remote Online Course

This course will be conducted remotely over the Internet without any synchronous meetings.

All course material, including links to graded assignments, is available on the course website at https://juanmonroy.com/winter. Please read it in full so you are informed about the course.

We will not be using Blackboard.


Microsoft Teams

We will be using Microsoft Teams for submitting assignments—quizzes and exams.

If you were enrolled in our class before Wednesday, December 27, 2022, I added you to Microsoft Teams. Just go to https://teams.microsoft.com and sign in using your @login.cuny.edu account. Otherwise, following the directions below.

Follow these directions to join our course on Microsoft Teams:


  1. Open a browser window on your computer or device
  2. Go to <https://login.microsoft.com/>
  3. Enter your CUNY Login username as the username: firstname.lastname00@login.cuny.edu. Note that the username is @login.cuny.edu not @qmail.cuny.edu
  4. Sign in to CUNY Web Applications using your CUNY Login username and password
  5. Open another browser window and go to <https://teams.microsoft.com>
  6. Go to Join a Team using a code
  7. Enter the code I emailed you
  8. Enter following code: s3zarh6

Modules

All learning activities will be asynchronous, meaning that you will complete all the learning activities on your own time by the deadlines noted on the course website.

This course consists of twelve modules on contemporary media. For each module, there will be:

  1. assigned readings from the textbook
  2. a reading quiz covering the assigned readings
  3. a set of pre-recorded video lectures
  4. a lecture quiz on each video lecture

Each module will be released according to the following schedule and due the following Tuesday:

  1. Media, Communication, and Culture , January 3
  2. Books , January 4
  3. Newspapers , January 5
  4. Magazines , January 6
  5. Music , January 10
  6. Radio , January 11
  7. Movies , January 12
  8. Television , January 13
  9. Internet , January 17
  10. Advertising and Public Relations , January 18
  11. Media Economics , January 19
  12. Media Regulation , January 20

After four modules, there will be an exam on the material you have covered:

  1. Exam 1, available Friday, January 6, 8:00 AM, due Tuesday, January 10, 11:59 PM
  2. Exam 2, available Friday, January 13, 8:00 AM, due Tuesday, January 17, 11:59 PM
  3. Exam 3, available Friday, January 20, 8:00 AM, due Tuesday, January 24, 11:59 PM. No late exams will be accepted

Although the course is asynchronous, you must complete each module, each quiz, and each exam by the deadline specified on this course website.

Getting Started

To get started for now, complete the following tasks. There are instructions for these on the course website .


  1. Get the required textbook: Understanding Media and Culture, available from Open Textbook Library
  2. Join the course on Microsoft Teams
    1. Go to <https://teams.microsoft.com>
    2. Sign in using your @login.cuny.edu credentials
    3. Click to Join or Create Team
    4. Select Join Team with a Code
    5. Enter the following code I emailed you
  3. Complete the Welcome Survey on Microsoft Teams by Wednesday, January 4, 6:00 PM. If you cannot complete this last step by then, please contact me. Otherwise I will have to report you as not attending the class and you will be dropped.
  4. Begin work for Module 1
