Having twice held class on snowy days when campus was open at Queens College and twice I had only about half of the class come, I decided that I would not make the diligent half of the class suffer. I canceled class.

As it was, it was already taking much longer than usual to get to Forest Hills (the end of the subway portion of my commute to Flushing), and then when I arrived at the bus stop, there was a line that wrapped around the block. And to make matters worse there was no sign of an arriving bus.

When I assessed the situation and noticed that getting to class was going to take FOREVER, I received a voice mail from the department administrator that was wondering whether I had canceled class.

She then told me that she herself was leaving early so she could drive home. I figured that if she was getting out when the getting was good, not holding class, would be a prudent idea, especially considering that so many of my students drive to campus.

In lieu of today’s class, I’ll record a “podcast” style lecture at home and have the students listen to it before our next class.
